Heidelberg Primary School is fortunate to have a wonderful library that is used by all students across the school. Located in the original building, the library has a sense of history and is an inviting and comfortable space. All classes have a library session each week with their teacher in which they listen to stories, talk about books, have quiet reading time and the opportunity to browse and borrow from the up to date library collection of books.
Our qualified Librarian is a trained teacher who ensures that the library is maintained to the highest possible standards and regularly engages the students in discussions about new books, authors, illustrators and the creative processes of book production.
The library is an important aspect of the school’s commitment to fostering a love and appreciating of reading. To support this aim, the school also participates in the annual Premiers’ Reading Challenge. Heidelberg Primary School has participated in this significant event since its inception in 2005 and it is always pleasing to see our students receive their official Premiers’ Reading Challenge certificates at the end of each year.
Book Week is another exciting annual literary celebration at Heidelberg Primary School to promote literature and literacy in our school. Book Week celebrations include:
* classroom literature activities focussing on the CBCA ( Children’s book Council of Australia) shortlisted books
* a Carnival Book Fair in our library
* a fabulous whole school Book Week Dress Up Parade
* Grandparents’ morning
The Heidelberg Primary School library is a wonderful and much valued asset to our school.
